Forest Fire

Taku C. Tacho

Taking into account the magnitude of devastation, the speed at which it spreads to nearby areas, its potential to change the direction and ability to jump roads and rivers forest fires are completely different from other ordinary fire accident.

Last week a fire broke out at Gano area at Ziro in Lower Subansiri district in which Bamboos grooves and other valuable trees were burnt down. Forest fires also known as Bush fire generally occur during winter due to hot and dry climate. It completely destroys the eco system posing great threat to human as well as wildlife and infrastructure. The effects of forest fire are more destructive than the beneficial effects.

It may not be correct but in my opinion, forest fires are mainly caused by human hands. Major cause of forest fires in Ziro and other parts of the state are human carelessness like throwing burning cigarettes carelessly.

Few steps to prevent forest in or nearby forest land are,

--Attend the fire until it is completely dead or out.

-- Appoint a responsible person or GB to detect such unlawful activity in the village.

--Burn only natural vegetation or untreated wood products.

--Burn at least 50 ft from structures and 500 ft from any forest area.

--Don’t burn if it is too windy.

Efforts to promote agroforestry

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) called on countries to boost efforts to promote agroforestry, a practice involving the combination of trees with crop or livestock production, stressing it can help millions of people escape poverty and prevent environmental degradation, making it crucial to ensure food security in the future.

Agroforestry combines agricultural and forestry technologies to create more productive and sustainable systems for land use. According to FAO, the agroforestry sector is a significant source both of local commodities such as fuelwood, timber, fruit and fodder for livestock as well as global ones such as coconut, coffee, tea, rubber and gum.

In a new guide aimed at decision-makers, non-governmental organizations and governmental institutions, FAO shows how agroforestry can be integrated into national strategies and how policies can be adjusted to specific conditions.

The guide provides 10 tracks for policy action, including raising awareness of agroforestry systems among farmers and the global community; reforming unfavourable regulations in forestry, agricultural and rural codes; and clarifying land-use policy regulations.

In addition, the guide argues policymakers should create incentives to implement agroforestry. For example, farmers introducing trees on farms should be rewarded in the form of grants, tax exemptions, cost-sharing programmes, microcredits or through assistance to develop their infrastructure.

Long-term credit is also key as benefits to farmers planting trees reach them only after some years. The value of carbon sequestered and other environmental services provided by the trees could also be applied to paying the interest.

Ensure regular power supply

Dear Editor,

I, being the chairman of the Education and Cultural Development Society (ECDS), would like to urge to state govt. particularly power minister to ensure regular and uninterrupted power supply in Arunachal, particularly in twin capital city.  It has been observed since a couple of month back that the power supply has been totally disrupted in capital city and others parts of state also.

At a time, when the state Govt  is encouraging  self-employment  venture,  many electricity-based business establishments  run by the unemployed youths  of the state such as cyber café, car wash centre, restaurants, bakery and many others  remain functionless due to erratic and poor  power supply. The  present power situation also discourage us to run such type of business/institutions where constant power supply is needed.

As we are in computer age of 21st century, even the working of Govt. offices, banking sector has badly been affected by irregular power supply. It is not a good sign for development of  state and nation as a whole.

If the power scenario of the state remains pathetic for long time, then the day will not far when the entire businessmen who mostly depend on electricity to run their business will run away from state  to re-start their business in others state and  for this the blame will go to state Govt only.

Yours

Nabam Akin Hina

Chairman, ECDS
